About Dublin Mountains SPA

The Dublin Mountains Special Protection Area (SPA) is a designated conservation site in County Dublin, Ireland, aimed primarily at protecting important bird populations and their habitats. This SPA encompasses a variety of landscapes including heathlands, woodlands, and blanket bogs spread across the Dublin Mountains just south of the bustling capital city. The site is particularly important for birds such as the Hen Harrier, Merlin, and other rare raptors, which rely on these upland habitats for breeding and foraging. The SPA supports a diverse ecological mosaic including heather moorlands, native oak and holly woodlands, marshy grasslands, and rocky outcrops that form crucial shelter and feeding areas for wildlife.

Historically, the Dublin Mountains area has been a place of both natural and cultural significance, intertwining ancient trackways and remnants of historical estates with richly diverse flora and fauna. Recreationally, the SPA and surrounding Dublin Mountains offer excellent hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, and scenic viewpoints, with easy access from Dublin city center. Popular outdoor pursuits include traversing parts of the Wicklow Way and exploring the extensive trail networks developed by Coillte and local mountain trail groups. The natural beauty combined with accessibility makes the Dublin Mountains SPA a popular destination for both casual visitors and dedicated nature enthusiasts. Visitors can experience panoramic views of Dublin and Dublin Bay from summits such as Fairy Castle and Kippure, while immersing themselves in the tranquillity of protected habitats.
